- Racine On One Good
Leg centers on Racine, a
high school senior who after seriously breaking a leg,
is still on crutches, her leg is paralyzed after almost
one year in a cast and two surgeries. Racine is
new at JFK High School, and noticed Mike, the star of
the baseball team, but because of her physical impairment,
reluctant to approach him. One morning, Mike notices
Racine for the first time and is taken by her beauty. He
is also fascinated by the way she moves effortlessly
on her crutches with the grace of a ballerina. Mike
has an attraction to females in plaster leg casts, on
crutches. or both, but is too bashful to approach Racine. They
meet by chance in the school library, and after two
weeks agree to date. Racine suspects that Mike
has a fetish for her condition, but decides to play
the game.
Their first date is a success. Mike is very
attentive to Racine's needs because of her handicap. He
lifts her lifeless leg into and out of his car, retrieves
books for her in the library, and even guides her
leg while at Mass through sitting, standing, and kneeling
positions. Racine soon forgets about Mike's fetish,
as their relationship turns to love.
Racine, On One Good Leg follows
a young woman's life with disability, describing how
she copes with everyday situations; something not
usually found in fiction. A school counselor
would not allow Racine to process in with her class
for commencement exercises, but she stands her ground,
demonstrating how she is able to walk in on her crutches,
climb five steps up to the stage, and then ascend
the risers to her assigned seat. She and Mike
dance at their prom, Racine still on crutches, and
with a very bare stiletto heel sandal on her good
foot. Mike is away, in the navy, when Racine,
her leg near being normal, is involved in an auto
accident, her right leg again broken in several places,
along with her hip, pelvis and left leg. Mike is granted
emergency leave and visits Racine in the hospital
where she is in a body cast, toes to chest. Racine
tantalizes him by asking him to apply lotion to her
toes. Mike breaks down as he notices that Racine's
left foot and toes are callused, but the right is
not, a result of not wearing a shoe for a year and
a half
